This page is dedicated to many physiotherapy assessment questions you might have as the more informed you are, the sooner you’ll contact me to help you recover from your injury or from chronic pain.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM AN INITIAL PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSESSMENT?

ASSESSMENT:

During your initial assessment, I will discuss your primary concern, whether it is pain, lack of flexibility due to an injury, a chronic issue, or any other problem. My priority is to understand your physical symptoms and how these issues affect your daily life. I will ask about your occupation, hobbies, the nature of your pain, and how it impacts your routine. These questions provide valuable insight into your condition, further confirmed through physical tests, specific movements, and medical reports. Setting recovery goals is crucial, as it helps determine the functional impact of your discomfort on your life. While physiotherapy does not provide instant results, regular sessions aim to reduce pain, increase mobility, and improve your confidence and strength.

PHYSICAL TESTS / HANDS ON ASSESSMENT:

After discussing your concerns, I will perform a physical (objective) assessment to observe and identify the issues. This involves guiding you through simple movements to evaluate pain, weakness, or lack of flexibility in specific muscle groups. I will also assess your balance, endurance, fall risk, and gait. While these tests may temporarily aggravate your symptoms, they are crucial for accurately pinpointing the origin of the problem.

EDUCATION:

I believe it is essential for clients to understand why we do what we do. Following my assessment, I prioritize educating you about your condition and the treatment process. I will explain my findings and outline the initial steps for your recovery, ensuring you have a clear understanding of the process before we develop a detailed treatment plan.

TREATMENT PLAN:

Together, we will develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your lifestyle and schedule. After understanding your current issues, medical history, and goals, I will determine the most effective approach to support your recovery. I will provide you with specific exercises to perform at home between sessions, ensuring you thoroughly understand them during the assessment so you can confidently and independently carry them out.

OTHER THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE INITIAL ASSESSMENT:

  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows for free movement and easy access to the affected area. For knee, ankle, or lower back issues, bring shorts. For neck or shoulder pain, a loose-fitting t-shirt is ideal.

  • Bring your health care card with you for the initial visit.

  • Keep in mind that an hour of treatment per week cannot counteract 8-15 hours a day of poor habits or posture. Through education, we can improve your posture, activity, and body awareness for quicker recovery.

  • If you have any questions about initial physiotherapy assessments, feel free to contact me. To get started, book your initial assessment online by clicking the button below.

  • Note: My focus is on exercises that build strength, improve flexibility, and reduce pain, with minimal use of modalities such as ultrasound, ice, heat, TENS, and electrical stimulation. Education and movement are my primary approaches.

DO I NEED DOCTOR'S REFERRAL?

You don't need a formal referral to see a physiotherapist. As "first contact" practitioners, we can examine, diagnose, treat, and advise without a doctor's referral. However, if you are using an extended health care plan, please check its specific requirements, as I do not direct bill your insurance company.
